Abstract
The Multiband OFDM Alliance (MBOA) issued an ultrawideband (UWB) radio
specification that may be applied to 480 Mb/s wireless USB
applications. This presentation details the design and simulation of a
direct-conversion radio architecture in support of this MBOA proposal.
This presentation begins with a review of UWB technology and
applications followed by link budget analysis to generate top-level
design specifications for the analog radio blocks. A behavioral-level
DSP design kit is briefly described to illustrate how modern electronic
design automation (EDA) tools can be leveraged to generate and detect
the complex waveforms such as those used in UWB. The core of the
presentation covers design of individual circuit blocks that comprise
the radio with all circuit design based on the UMC 0.13 um CMOS
process. Radio transmitter and receiver design is covered with emphasis
on the I/Q modulator and demodulator, synthesizer, T/R switch,
low-noise amplifier, and transmit power amplifier.
The UWB radio design work is part of a larger collaboration between
Ansoft and UMC to develop an electromagnetics-based design flow for RF
CMOS. Our goal is to propose an architecture and demonstrate radio
design, simulation, and fabrication using Ansoft's design flow and
UMC's foundry process, respectively. Ansoft is designing the circuits;
UMC is performing layout and fabrication. The result of this effort
will validate the Ansoft design flow for high-performance radio
circuits, validate UMC's process for UWB circuits, and will provide a
reference design for UMC and Ansoft customers.
